The availability of farmland continues to shrink in Orange County, creating limited access to freshly picked, locally grown food. Urban Produce in Irvine is one company that has developed a solution through a futuristic system that produces microgreens indoors in Irvine.
Urban Produce built a High Density Vertical Growing System in a warehouse that uses advanced hydroponic technologies in a controlled and automated environment. Its patented technology takes the best of hydroponics and increases the yield by stacking produce vertically, rotating it through an indoor system, and giving the plants equal light and air distribution. Each plant receives the proper amount of water, and nutrition when needed. The process greatly increases growing efficiency and significantly reduces costs.
This produce is delivered to some local markets, saving on delivery costs and creating access to a much fresher product for the consumer. In fact, it is still alive and growing in its clamshell when you purchase it.
Sourced Cuisine is thrilled to work with these fresh, local microgreens, which are the 1-2 week old version of the plant. This baby plant provides a higher concentration of nutrients to the body than the fully grown plant. Some studies show that the nutrient concentration of the microgreen is 4-6 times that of the mature plant, so microgreens are a great way to bolster the body’s health. We will be organizing a tour and tasting event at Urban Produce soon, so keep an eye out for this great opportunity to see this futuristic farming at work today.
