Raw vegan desserts are nutrient packed little goodies dressed up as tempting pastries. Unlike their traditional counterparts in the dessert world, they are made with the nourishment of nature and uncooked to keep their beneficial nutrients intact. When made with thought, love and creativity, they are not only delicious but incorporate ingredients that support the whole body (not just the taste buds).
These desserts are composed primarily with fruit, nuts, seeds and unexpected yet powerful ingredients like coconut or chia seeds. They are not made with the cream, eggs, flour and (hopefully not) the sugar that traditional desserts require.
It takes imagination to create a dessert using just what the plant world can provide. If handled well, these are just as delicious as traditional desserts, and your body thanks you. It is much easier for the body to digest and make use of the components of fruit, nuts and seeds than the dairy, sugar and flours that are used in traditional desserts. Fruit contains natural sugars, and when you use a whole fruit instead of an extract (syrup or juice), the body is receiving the sugar from the fruit within the package (skin, fiber) that nature intended it to be consumed in. The fiber slows down the sugar as it goes into the system. And in the process, you consume the many beneficial nutrients from the fruit – vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and phytochemicals.
Making these desserts is a matter of understanding the right ingredients to use, finding fresh and locally grown fruit, and substituting the ingredients that dont support the body with the powerful, plant-based ingredients that do.
“What is so special about Sourced Cuisine’s raw desserts is how good they taste. They taste better than traditional desserts,” said Terri Remley. “For me, the fact that they are also healthy is just ‘icing on the cake’.”
